Tips-For-Planning-Your-Dream-GardenTIPS ON PLANNING YOUR DREAM GARDEN

So, you’re ready to embark on creating the garden of your dreams - congratulations! You’ve probably been thinking about it for a while. We don’t blame you - it’s a big investment, after all and similar to the common saying ‘a garden is for life, not just for Christmas!’ (okay, so maybe not life, but for a long time!) Let’s not also forget that a well-designed garden can add substantial value to your house price.

But most importantly, a well-designed garden will provide enjoyment for you, your family and your friends for many years to come, creating many happy memories. Well worth it.  With that said, here’s some tips to help with planning your dream garden:

1. Know your budget
Probably the most important place to start! You know what it’s like when you go shopping – it’s all too easy to keep adding items to the basket, which in the end all adds up. Setting a budget (and sticking to it!) will keep you on track so you know exactly where you stand.

2. Gather inspiration
Now for the fun part. If you haven’t already, gather as much inspiration for your dream garden as possible. Out and about and see a garden you like? Take pictures. See something on the tele? Scribble it down. Of course there’s some great websites to gather inspiration from.
The Royal Horticultural Society is blooming with beautiful designs and hey, don’t forget to take a look at our portfolio too!

3. Be practical
After gathering all that inspiration you’re probably brimming with wonderful ideas – great stuff. Now, not to burst your bubble, but remember to stay grounded with your planning (excuse the pun!) While it is your dream garden, it also has to be practical to your lifestyle and what you’ve gathered along the way for inspiration might look great, but would it work for you? There’s no point in going for a design that requires a great deal of time and attention if you’ve got kids and a dog running around – it simply isn’t practical. It’s best to take that inspiration and tailor it to suit. Ask yourself questions like:

• “How much time do I have to maintain the garden?”
• “How much time will we spend in the garden?”
• “What plants do we want and how much care will they require?”
• “Which plants will suit our garden?”
• “What will we use the garden for?”
• “What view do we want to have of the garden from our house?”
• “Where’s our favourite patch of the garden?”
• “What are the sun patterns like?”

By answering these questions, you can shape your ideas into a garden design that will work for you. If you’re pulling your hair out at the thought of these, don’t worry – number 4 will help!

4. Call in the experts
This is always advisable. Professional landscapers are exactly that – professionals. They can provide help with designing the garden, all the way through to completion and also long-term maintenance. Professional landscapers will know the type of garden that will suit the space you have available and will be able to create a bespoke design to suit your needs. This is the fun part where you can add in all your extra little touches that will make your garden unique. Plus, the great thing about hiring a professional is that you know your garden is in safe hands! Once the designs are finalised you can leave them to get on with it until it’s complete. Then you get to sit back, relax and enjoy your dream garden!

5. Remember: maintenance!
How well you maintain your garden will impact how your garden will look in 10/20 years’ time. It goes back to the point of being practical. If you know you are limited on time, then a garden that is low-maintenance is a better choice. Again, if you’re hiring a professional landscaper they’ll be able to advise on this. They’ll also be able to advise on the best products to use going forward to keep your dream garden looking…dreamy.

Your dream garden will soon become a reality!
